When the Ministry Feels Impossible, God's Arm Is Not Too Short

Every ministry leader eventually encounters a moment that no amount of planning, experience, or hard work can solve. Attendance declines. Finances tighten. A key leader steps away. A family crisis interrupts your focus. The vision God gave you suddenly feels larger than your resources, your energy, and perhaps even your faith. Those moments often produce a question we rarely say out loud: "God... where are You?"

If you've ever stood at the edge of what seemed impossible, you're in good company. Moses asked questions. Jeremiah wrestled with uncertainty. Abraham stared at circumstances that contradicted God's promise. Even Job struggled to understand what God was doing. Yet in each situation, God responded with the same timeless truth:

"Is the LORD's arm too short?" (Numbers 11:23). This question still reverberates to every pastor and ministry leader today.

When God's Promise Seems Bigger Than Your Resources

In Numbers 11, Israel complained because they wanted meat. God promised He would provide enough for an entire month. Moses couldn't see how. There were over 600,000 men, not counting women and children. Even if every flock were slaughtered or every fish in the sea were caught, Moses couldn't imagine how God's promise could become reality. (Num.11:21-22)

Notice what God didn't do. He didn't explain His strategy. He didn't reveal His logistics. Instead, He challenged Moses' perspective. "Is the LORD's arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you." (Numbers 11:23). The issue wasn't God's ability. It was Moses' perspective.

Dear ministry leader, God’s arm has not lost its power. Your greatest challenge is rarely the size of the problem. It is often the smallness of our view of the greatness of our God.

How often do ministry leaders make the same mistake? We calculate budgets, volunteers, attendance trends, facility limitations, and available resources, and then quietly conclude that the assignment God has given us simply can't be accomplished with what we have. But God has never been limited by what limits us.

God's Power Is Never Measured by Our Circumstances

Isaiah reminds us: "Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save..." (Isaiah 59:1). The Hebrew word for "save" (yāšaʽ) means to rescue, deliver, bring into freedom, and grant victory. God doesn't merely help us cope with impossible situations. He delivers people from them.

Our circumstances may seem overwhelming to us, but they never overwhelm our God. There is no degree of difficulty with God. What seems impossible with humans remains completely possible with God.

Four Examples Who Chose Faith Over Circumstances

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly demonstrated that His power operates beyond human limitations because there is no degree of difficulty with God.

Abraham and Sarah

God promised them a son when both were far beyond childbearing years (Genesis 18:13-14). Romans 4 tells us Abraham did not consider the deadness of his own body or Sarah’s womb greater than God's promise. Faith doesn't ignore reality. Genuine faith simply refuses to make current reality greater than Gods power to fulfill His promise.

Mary

When Gabriel announced she would give birth to the Messiah, Mary's response was honest: "How can this be, I’m a virgin?" The angel answered, "For with God nothing will be impossible." (Luke 1:37)

Mary didn't need to understand every detail. She simply surrendered: "Be it unto me according to your word." (Luke 1:38). Many personal and ministry breakthroughs begin with that same response.

Jeremiah

Jerusalem was surrounded by the Babylonian army. The city was about to fall. Jeremiah himself sat in prison. Then God instructed him to buy land. From every human perspective, it seemed foolish. Yet Jeremiah prayed, "Ah, Sovereign LORD... nothing is too hard for You." (Jeremiah 32:17)

God immediately confirmed it: "Is anything too hard for Me?" (Jeremiah 32:27). Sometimes God asks us to invest in tomorrow while everyone else is convinced there won't be one.

Job

Job wanted answers. Instead, God gave him perspective. For four chapters (Job 38-41), God asked Job more than seventy questions about creation. "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?"

Instead of explaining Job's suffering, God revealed His greatness. Job's conclusion became one of the strongest declarations of faith in Scripture: "I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld." (Job 42:2). Sometimes the greatest answer God gives is a greater revelation of Himself and His power.

Ministry Needs a Fresh View of God

One of the greatest dangers in ministry is becoming so familiar with challenges that we unconsciously begin measuring God's ability by our limitations. We start thinking in terms of what we have instead of who He is. But God's power exists outside the dimensions of our circumstances. He is not intimidated by shrinking budgets. He is not surprised by declining attendance. He is not overwhelmed by community needs. He is not limited by our lack of resources.

Every sunrise is a sermon from heaven. God commands the dawn with perfect precision, painting the sky in colors no human artist could replicate. It rises whether we notice or not, proof of His faithfulness, mercy, and sustaining power. The same God who orchestrates the sunrise is sovereign over your ministry assignment empowering you to fulfill it.

Lift Your Eyes Again

Perhaps today you're facing an impossible situation. Maybe you're wondering how your church will move forward. Maybe you've prayed for years over prodigal children, discouraged leaders, financial needs, or a community that seems resistant to the gospel. Remember the examples of Scripture.

Like Mary, place God's promise at the center of your circumstances. Like Abraham, refuse to let today's reality become greater than God's Word. Like Jeremiah, declare that nothing is too hard for the Lord. Like Job, worship the God whose purposes can never be stopped.

Lift your eyes. Renew your awe. Stand firm. The same God who fed the multitudes in the wilderness, who opened Sarah’s womb, who raised Jesus from the dead, is moving on your behalf. His arm is strong. His word is true. And His assignment for your life has not changed.

The circumstances may still look overwhelming. But our God has not changed. His arm is not short. His power has not diminished. And His promises remain unshaken. So don't measure your ministry by the size of the obstacles you are facing. Measure those obstacles by the greatness of your God.
