Seeing Opportunity Where Others See Obstacles

Why Joshua and Caleb Changed History
In my previous blog I mentioned that I would unpack the different response of the twelve spies in Numbers 13. You remember the story; twelve leaders walked into the same land. They saw the same fortified cities. The same giants. The same overflowing abundance. The same promise from God. The same God given opportunity.
Yet ten returned convinced it couldn't be done. Two came back, Joshua and Caleb, believing it must be done. The difference wasn't “what” they saw. The difference was “how” they saw it.
Every ministry leader eventually faces that same decision.
Opportunity Often Arrives Disguised
When Moses sent twelve spies into Canaan, every one of them confirmed that God's promise was true. The land truly flowed with milk and honey. The opportunity was undeniable. So were the obstacles. Ten spies allowed fear to magnify the giants until they lost sight of God's promise. Their report was persuasive. Their arguments seemed practical. Their influence was significant.
An entire nation chose fear over faith. Joshua and Caleb looked at the very same giants through a completely different lens. They remembered the God who had parted the Red Sea. The God who provided in the wilderness. The God who had already promised them the land.
They understood something every ministry leader must remember: Opportunities are rarely wrapped in comfort. More often, they arrive disguised as impossible assignments that require complete dependence on God.
The Church Faces the Same Choice
Today's church faces giants of its own. Communities are changing. Culture is shifting. Resources can feel limited. The temptation is to spend our energy talking about the obstacles. But Kingdom leaders refuse to let obstacles become larger than God's promises.
The greatest opportunity before the Church has not disappeared. If anything, it has grown.
The harvest Jesus spoke about has not disappeared. If anything, it has become more visible. People are longing for truth. Families are searching for hope. Young people are looking for purpose. They are asking questions previous generations often ignored. Many have discovered that success, wealth, entertainment, and technology cannot satisfy the deepest needs of the human heart.
Jesus was right when He declared that the harvest is plentiful (Matt.9:37-38). Hearts are open to the Gospel. The fields remain "white unto harvest," and Christ is still building His Church. The opportunity before the Church is enormous. The question is whether we will recognize it.
Vision Must Become Action
Vision without action becomes wishful thinking. Action without vision becomes exhausting activity. But vision joined with obedient action transforms churches, impacts communities, and influences generations.
Churches that flourish tomorrow won't necessarily have the largest budgets, the newest technology, or the most impressive facilities. They will be led by pastors and leadership teams who recognize God's opportunities, unite around His vision, and move forward together in courageous obedience.
Every ministry leader should regularly ask:
- What opportunity has God placed before us that we may be overlooking?
- Are we aligned around Christ's mission or merely maintaining ministry?
- Three years from now, will we celebrate our obedience or regret the opportunities we ignored?
Those aren't merely strategic questions. They are Kingdom questions.
Which Story Will Your Ministry Tell?
Jeremiah declared of Pharaoh, "He has missed his opportunity" (Jer.46:17). What a tragic legacy for a leader who possessed so much influence and yet failed to act when the moment demanded it.
The same tragedy unfolded at Kadesh Barnea. Ten spies discouraged God's people from entering God's promise. Joshua and Caleb became known as leaders who trusted God's Word, embraced His opportunity, and led others forward.
Every ministry leader and local church is writing one of those stories today. Which story will yours tell?
This is not the hour for louder opinions that foster hesitation. This is not the time to be distracted by the noise of fear. This is the hour for courageous leadership. This is the time to discern God's voice, align His people around His mission, and seize the opportunities He has placed before us.
Jesus said the harvest is ready. The mission remains unchanged. Now is the time to recognize God's opportunity and seize it with confidence.
