The Church Wins When it’s United Together.
Nov 03, 2026"A house divided against itself cannot stand." Mark 3:25
Imagine standing on an ancient battlefield. The arrows begin to darken the sky. Enemy archers release volley after volley, each one designed to break the advancing army before it ever reaches its objective. Fear spreads. Instinct tells every soldier to protect himself.
But the Roman army did something remarkable.
Instead of every soldier fighting for himself, they locked shields together in what became known as the testudo, or "tortoise" formation. Soldiers on the front raised shields before them. Those on the sides protected the flanks. Those in the center lifted their shields overhead. Individually they were vulnerable. Together they became nearly impenetrable.
Arrows bounced harmlessly away. Spears lost their effectiveness. And while the enemy expected them to retreat, the Romans kept moving forward. Not because one soldier was exceptionally strong, but because they were united. The Roman testudo formation has become one of history’s most effective military strategies.
The picture is striking because it illustrates one of the greatest principles in God's Kingdom. The Church advances best when it advances together.
God's Strategy Has Always Been Unity
From the beginning, God has never intended His people to accomplish His mission in isolation. Jesus prayed one of His final recorded prayers not for greater talent, larger crowds, or more resources. He prayed for unity.
"That they all may be one... so that the world may believe that You have sent Me." John 17:21
Notice the connection. Unity isn't simply for the benefit of believers. Unity becomes one of the Church's greatest testimonies to an unbelieving world. When Christians genuinely love one another, serve together, forgive quickly, and pursue one mission, the world sees something supernatural. The Gospel becomes visible.
This unity brings the commanded blessing of God (Ps.133) and releases the power of a living Christ, much like the early Church experienced miracles and favor when they were “all with one accord” (Acts 5:12).
The Enemy Knows the Power of Division
Satan understands something many churches forget. If he can divide believers, he can weaken their witness. He doesn't have to destroy a ministry if he can distract it. He doesn't have to remove leaders if he can isolate them. He doesn't have to stop the Church if he can convince believers to compete instead of collaborate.
How many ministries have lost momentum because relationships fractured? How many churches have spent precious energy fighting internal battles instead of reaching their communities? How many pastors carry unnecessary burdens because they feel they must stand alone?
Division has always been one of the enemy's oldest weapons. Unity has always been one of God's greatest strengths.
The Testudo Principle for Christian Leaders
The Roman testudo worked because every soldier understood something bigger than himself. His shield wasn't just for his protection. It protected the person beside him.
Imagine if one soldier decided to lower his shield because he preferred a different strategy. One gap would expose the entire formation now becomes vulnerable.
The same principle applies in ministry. When leaders refuse to encourage one another...When churches compete instead of cooperate. When personal agendas become more important than Kingdom purposes...Small gaps become large openings for discouragement, conflict, confusion, and spiritual attack.
But when leaders lock shields together... When they pray together. Serve together. Celebrate one another's victories. Carry one another's burdens. Speak well of one another. Stand together on biblical truth. The enemy discovers he is facing something extremely difficult to penetrate.
Unity Doesn't Mean Uniformity
The beauty of the Body of Christ is not that everyone looks alike. It is that everyone contributes differently. Paul reminds us:"Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." 1 Corinthians 12:27
Every member has a different function. Different gifts. Different personalities. Different callings. Yet one Head, Jesus Christ and one mission, His.
A Roman shield by itself offered limited protection. Hundreds of shields locked together became a moving fortress. Likewise, individual ministries within a church may experience fruitfulness. But a unified church can transform cities and impact generations.
Advancing The Cause of Christ in a Dark World
Today's culture often resembles an ancient battlefield. Truth is challenged. Families are under attack. Hope is fading. Confusion grows louder. Many believers feel the fiery darts of doubt, discord, fear, and persecution coming from every direction. Isolated believers are vulnerable and become easy targets. This is not the time to separate. This is the time to close ranks.
Now is the moment for pastors to encourage one another. For churches to celebrate one another instead of comparing themselves. For ministry teams to align around Christ's vision rather than personal preferences. For believers to remember that our battle is not against one another but against the spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12).
Revivals throughout the centuries have often begun with believers and churches uniting in prayer and purpose. When God’s people lock shields, the enemy’s attacks fail, and the Kingdom of God advances. When the Church walks in unity, the power of a living Christ is manifested in a dark world.
Every Shield Matters
Perhaps the greatest lesson of the testudo is this: No shield was insignificant. The soldier on the front mattered. The soldier on the side mattered. The soldier holding the shield overhead mattered. Every position strengthened the whole formation.
The same is true in God's Kingdom. Every pastor. Every staff member. Every volunteer. Every elder. Every worship leader. Every children's worker. Every prayer warrior. Every faithful believer.
Together we create a testimony that no individual could ever produce alone.
A Call to Lock Shields
The world does not need a fragmented Church. It needs a united Church. It needs leaders who refuse to allow offense to become division. It needs ministries willing to collaborate for the sake of the Gospel. It needs believers who understand that while we may not agree on every preference, we stand firmly together around the person of Jesus Christ and the mission He has entrusted to us.
The arrows may still fly. The opposition may still come. But when God's people lock shields together, protecting one another, encouraging one another, and advancing together the mission of Christ, the gates of hell cannot prevail against Christ's Church (Matt.16:18).
The Kingdom has never been built by isolated heroes. It has always been advanced by united believers moving forward together under the lordship of Jesus Christ. So the question for every ministry leader is simple: Who are you locking shields with?
Let's Lock Shields and Advance Together!
No pastor or ministry leader was ever meant to fulfill Christ's mission alone. We are stronger when we encourage one another, learn from one another, and unite around the vision God has entrusted to us.
At Marry the Vision, my passion is strengthening pastors, ministry leaders and their teams, align their people with Christ's vision, and advance His Kingdom purposes.
